(Home) Bluish white smoke and rough idle cold, & poor starting warm.

Hey guys, need a little help. Had a lot of problems since the other day. Went to the garage for a leaking valve, ended up towing it away after the job was completed. They couldn't restart it. Anyway with some help from another mechanic, I had it started and running again. Only this time I had overheating and loss of power. Changed head and gasket, many hiccups and rechecking of timing, it sounds very nice now. My problems are that it smokes on cold start bluish white with rough idle. When warm, turns over many times before starting. If I glow it when warm, it starts much easier. What could be the problem? Could it be timing slightly out? Or is it my previous proble m of not enough valve clearance coming to haunt me? Oh it is a 2CT.

White smoke likely to be timing.
Probably the root of your other problems.

Thanks Clive, would it (timing) also cause an overheating too?

Timing/mixture could also lead to overheating. If you have white smoke, this can also be caused by water/moisture in the cylinder(s), so could be headgasket still. Additionally, if there's moisture in the cylinders then it will be difficult to start.

You say you have changed the head & gasket, was the head reconned/new/second haned? Is it flat? Is it cracked?

Many variables I'm afraid, but worth exploring some until you find the problem, start with the pump timing, it's the least daunting.

Regards Rob.
