(Home) Radiator

Hi all, just to say I think this a brilliant site, only came across it through Clive, cheers mate!
Problem this time? I found the radiator leaking on 98 turbo, townace repaired one leak by soldering the radiator frame. Now I find another leak, so I decided to renew radiator so looking in the book seems easy job(i've renewed radiators before) so removed pipes and fixing bolt at the top of the radiator but it does not pull out. I can lean the radiator forwards and when I do I can see another radiator behind the first one(not as per book)can anyone tell me 1, what is the second radiator for? and 2, why wont the first radiator come out?
Thanks all

The front one is for the A/C.
How it comes out I've not done that on a Townace yet, my Spacecruiser one fell out!

There are a further two retaining nuts underneath, one on left and one on right. Is yours a 4WD, if so there will be another two coolant pipes at the back of rad feeding another rad on top of the a/c coil. Mine is a 4WD and I had to use a bit of jiggery pokery to pull the rad out as the bottom mounting lug fouls the front diff casing but it does come out. Another point you might consider is you may find it a cheaper option to have your rad re-cored opposed to a new rad-all depends if you can go without your ace for a few days. I had mine re-cored for £120 , new was about £300

Mark, is it a 4wd or 2wd?

Yes it's a 2wd, I removed the top stud and the pipes, saw two nuts underneath and removed them though i'm not sure if these retain the radiator that is set back. Both rads seem to be leaking. Vans off the road due to recent problems with van and now test is out so working on it in freetime (whatever thatis )

Hi Mark,

I have taken the radiator out of a 4 wheel drive Toyota Townace and I found it quite difficult although I am not a trained mechanic and it was my first one.

I would not advise this if you can do it without but I removed the Power steering Cylinder to get it out in the end as I lost my patience. There were just to many pipes and stuff to get it past otherwise.

The good news is getting it back in was easier although I had to bleed the power steering and although not that difficult, was a chore as I had not done this either before.

You need to be in a relaxed and a patient mood to do it, in my opinion.

Good luck.

Regards

Andy
