(Home) Vacuum pump/brake trouble

Dear All,

I recently enquired about a brake problem I had. OK it does seem to be a vacuum pump problem. BBC spares are now shut until jan 10 so where else can I go. Any one got any ideas? BBC would charge £65-00 second hand surely with your combined knowledge we can match this ( ish? ) Until it's fixed I'm on a 550cc motorbike freezing my jacobs off!
Please help.
Richard

"Any one got any ideas?"
The vacuum pump supplies vacuum for the brake diaphragm and, also, for the various other vacuum valves/actuators etc. Are you sure that it is the vacuum pump at fault and, are any other vacuum powered components failing to operate? I have not taken one apart but the vacuum pump, mounted on the alternator shaft, might just need a clean and check over, especially the three sliding vanes which might be gummed up. Is the small connecting vacuum hose OK or is it damaged in any way? If it is only the brakes which are affected, it may well be the master cylinder servo diaphragm which is at fault. It's difficult to get at but this component might also need a check for secure vacuum pipe connections.
If you are sure that it is the vacuum pump, a breaker might be able to help or, a look at the Townace items on Ebay
