(Home) Air flow modifications

Townies are great, and very popular here in nz. The litarse too, especially being a little more powered. Having been a litey and towny owner for 10 years( another ten years with 2c engines in toyota stationwagon models), I've always wanted to improve engine air flow in the vans, but never got around to figuring out HOW. Now, seeing as their are so many towny fans out there, I'm wondering if someone else has done this. The only engine I've ever cooked was a 2c in a towny. It was a hot day, 75 m/hr and a heater hose went. Anyway, the radiator has another in front? The grill and positioning are below par? Any modification ideas? Even if it hasnt been done, it would be interesting to consider HOW a better configuration could be achieved (with minimal work), making a good vehicle better. PS: I remember seeing VW Kombi's in outback Australia, and owners had fitted "bat ears" around cooling vents on side of engine bay, and mounting of an auxillary oil cooler on the roof!

I had overtemp problems on a 30C+ day with the air-con on so I installed two electric fans and put on a semi air scoop up to the radiator under the van, that should have pushed in a bit of natural air flow, but it did'nt.So i tried the viscous coupling fan after a while, and found out the original one was no good.So after putting on the new viscous coupling the temperature is running at half on a hot day with the air-con on,so as to air scoops, I don't think it works on vans that well.

Not having a towny at the moment its hard to think about, the company vehicle I cooked was the last townie I drove but never repaired myself or tinkered with- all paid for! I did a little search in A Answers and found some people playing with scoops too. Seems as if that viscous coupling is critical due to air flow restrictions, and opened seat up engine area driving at speed/load is worth doing. I suppose hotter climates like Australia will keep townie owners on their toes...
