(Home) Diesel 1c , 2c, 2c-t info needed

Hi, I am trying to find a toyota diesel engine that will fit into my 1986 4WD Toyota Tercel Wagon. I would like to keep the 4wd. I understand the 1C and 2C will fit but cannot find any information on the internet about these engines at all. I have found an importer in florida that has a complete 2C engine and 2wd transaxle. Can you please help me with some questions I have.

Will this engine bolt to my 4wd transaxle?
What is the fuel mileage to be expected?
How about performance and approx Horsepower?
More information on these engines?
Are they a good engine? reliable?

Please email me directy with response.
Thanks, Troy Woods

Good questions all round. There's plenty of info out there- there's a specific Toyota diesel forum in the US you might want to join- toyotadiesels.net IIRC.

A C-series will not go straight onto your transaxle. However, there is a slight possibility that you could swap the bellhousing and possibly input shaft from a diesel tranny. Bear in mind tho that even if this did work, the axle ratios wouldn't be optimum for a diesel.

Horsepower? 1C is around 60 or so, 2C about 70, 2CT 80- ish.

MPGs? I couldn't be sure how much of a loss the 4wd would take, but a corolla diesel should give 40-50 mpg (imp)

Reliable? Well, other than all the problems documented on this site, they're not bad. Not everlasting however...

But given the lack of parts support in the US and Canada, you might consider the VW TDI. Shouldn't be too much more work to mount, and you'd be getting a generation newer engine. check out tdiclub.com.

I'll copy by email just in case you don't come back to see us...
