(Home) Petrol Spacecruiser runs rough, like a pig

I own a 1988 2ltr Space Cruiser petrol. It starts fine but runs bad some times when warm it runs fine but this is very rare. I fitted new ht leads and dizzy cap, no different,Please can anybody help me to what my next move should be.

Have you recently changed spark plugs? What brand? Others on here will probably disagree but I have always found Jap engines (Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Subaru) to run better on NGK plugs. Champions are definitely crap and Bosch not much better. This was verified to me by a specialist tuning company who are also Bosch dealers.

I put new plugs in it in May when I bought it they are ngk.

I had same problem
one of my exhuast valves was sticking
I chnged oil and added some of the valve cleaner from local car parts and all was fine

Put oil treatment in still running rough, maybe slightly better. Any more ideas please?

have you tries having it tuned they might find the problem?

How soon after starting does it mis behave?
I'd second the having it tuned suggestion.
Things that spring to mind, dirty fuel filter, auto choke staying on/flap not returning fully, water in the dizzy, break in an electrical circuit that opens when warm/hot. all of these would be found by a tuner.

Starts and ticks over ok seems to struggle when it is put under load it might sound silly but are there points in the dizzy or is it electronic?

It's all within a solid state sealed unit.
So could be not advancing or dirty/blocked fuel filter I think.

are the vac hoses on right ?
hello clive

Richard, like um, read you changed dist. cap, but failed to notice presence of points or not. Probably too rich when hot, like aah, get it looked at by someone experienced. You will save time and money( probably didnt need ht lead or distributor cap replacement), and making the effort to find a good mechanic, means you will always have the opportunity to use them again in the future. Unless you enjoy learning as you go. I'm in NZ, so cant recommend someone local to you. Ask around, I like the retired guys that work from home, often good to deal with...

I put new plugs in it ran sweet for a week plug 2 oiled up. no smoke from exhaust, could it be the valve stem oil seals that are causing the plug to oil up.

- (#14778) Richard, 20 Jan 05 15:13

exactly the same as on mine the exhaust valve on the second keeps sticking I had the head off an checked when I first got it and they found nothing wrong but back to gether with new oil and valve cleaner in oil and ran fine
when it is due for an oil change the problem starts again I change oil add cleaner and fine again

I also have it tuned just before the mot which seems to keep it running ok

Hi everyone, some time ago this thread was running.
my space cruiser was running rough. Just wanted to let you know it turned out to be a vacuum problem. the valve screwed into the head at cylinder two has now been by passed and she is running fine.
