(Home) Overheating

Firstly can I wish all a happy new year.I've got a problem with my masterace 4wd that's overheating.I changed the timing belts over the holiday and finally got her back on the road yesterday. All appeared to be well yesterday.I took her for a spin with no problems. However today when taking a short journey to the fuel station the heater inside the cab was not blowing hot air and she overheated.i'm puzzled as to what the problem is.I refilled the water system slowly thinking it could be an air lock but still no heat.If the head gasket has gone would this stop the cab heater given heat?is it possible to have an intermittant head/head gasket problem. The reason I ask this is when I bought the vehicle it was overheating.i flushed the cooling system then it ran perfect and now its overheating again. Thanks to everyone in advance for all your help.

Eee, where to start... A pressure test would confirm the state of the rad cap to begin with, then you can spend time checking for pressure build-up in the system when running, check the viscous coupling etc etc.

All in the archives.

Simply put, no heat= no water...

when refilling water make sure heater settings are on,then open main radiater valve to allow water out slowly and top from radiator cap as water is draining through engine and heater to get rid of any air locks. When you think sufficient amount of water has passed through shut of radiator tap and then keep topping up as nesessary with water and anti freeze.
(Making sure your heater setting is on heater i.e. ensuring water is flowing to heater

"short journey ... overheated" What were the exact symptoms of this overheating? Gauge? steam? coolant pushed out?

I spent the last couple of days reading previous threads regarding overheating and (fingers crossed ) i think i've identified the problem and hopefully cured it.The rad cap was damaged so I've changed it.Also I've found that the viscous fan is not working correctly (intermittant).I've just got back from a 70km journey over the brecon beacons and she performed well.No sign of over heating even on a long hill climb from Brecon home.I'm going to fit an electric fan this week to cure the viscous fan problem and also i'm ordering a mason alarm to give an early warning of overheating. One further question. The horizontal rad at the front has an electric fan that operates when the temp reaches a critical level. Would it be an idea to set these up to operate via a switch o'r have a more sensitive sensor setting so that they come on before she's overheated and lost coolant? Many thanks for advice received and for previous threads.
