Could anyone tell me whether it is normal to get cold air coming out of the centre vents, even when they are shut and the heating is on. If its not normal, how do i correct this fault.

Yes normal. There is a diagram on Ace Answers.
The middle dash vents are on cold even with hot selected in all positions except for the two right hand direction selections. The two that blow round the feet? They should be able to be shut off though, check for debris.
