(Home) Vacuum tube loose

This site is so useful! Can anybody help with this? We have a 1992 Masterace Surf/Townie. We found a vac tube waving about, connected at one end to a cylinder which has other vac tubes running out of it. The cyclinder is attached to the bit of bulkhead that goes over the engine space towards the nearside. What I need to know is: where did the other end of the tube go? There is a bit of melted connection pipe in it.

I have looked for a melted-off connection, but it's hard to see what isn't there when you don't know what it is! If anyone is willing to take a look there are pictures at:

The intact connection is on the right, and each end of the vac tube is circled in red.

Incidentally, the auto transmission will not change up - is this a clue?

Awaiting your wisdom with baited breath, and an off-road Townie.

auto tranny is a seperate issue. kickdown cable looks a bit slack in the first photo tho.

right, it's my guess that what you have in the end of the tube is a plug. if you look at your first picture, halfway between the red rings there's a gold cylindrical item. if you find that there's a pipe sticking out the rear of it, pull the plug out of the hose, and stick the hose on there.

now, the question is why is it disconnected? that is the idle-up actuator, it raises the tickover speed when the a/c is on or the idle-up switch is depressed. the only reason to isolate that actuator might be that one of the solenoid valves (on the other end of the hose) is faulty...

Enid,

I have modified one of your photos & e-mailed it back to you, this shows where I THINK the pipe may be from.
Hope it helps.

Regards Rob.

Thanks David. The kick-down cable won't go back into it's sheath, so that explains the gears. We'll check the cable out. The idle up has never worked, so that diagnosis of the loose pipe is plausible. I guess it won't do any harm to leave the idle up as is for the mo.

Thanks Rob, that's very good of you. We are such Ace novices that all help is gratefully received. Aren't digital cameras useful!

Enid.

If you need more help then it would help to see the hoses going into the other idle-up vacuum valve. It's very similar to the one on your mystery hose and about 100mm nearer the rear of the car. But it's partly under the large corrugated flexible hose from the air filter. If you could undo the 3 clips on top of the air filter housing, swing the hose out of the way and let us see what hoses are there we might understand why someone left that hose waving about. On the other hand they could be forgiven for simply being at a loss to know where to put that one back, which is where D Miller says.
