(Home) Black smoke

Been through the faults folder , just wondered We've bought another townace to runaround in while the 2wd one that through its pulley gets sorted.
This one has just been registered in the uk and is very good except under acceleration back smoke na! a black curtain is drawn. Acceleration is not affected, however.
Tomorrow I will order a filter set from BBC and use fuel addative, should that cure/help or is it more sinster.
incidently it has 12 month mot. so how did it pass an Mot.

Black smoke is likely to mean (but not exclusively)unburnt fuel so, did the previous owner "tweak" the fuel screw, on the injection pump, prior to the MOT, and then re-adjust in order to sell the vehicle? With the fuel screw adjusted to a "lean" position, acceleration is likely to be poor so, if your acceleration is good (for a Townace)this might be the area you should investigate. Any diesel specialist will do a smoke test for you and give you the reading. From memory, the MOT reading is around 3-4 maximum and, if the smoke test is, say, 7-10, you can adjust the fuel screw to bring the figure down.
If the air & fuel filters have not been chaged for some time, there will be marked benefits if they are replaced.
