(Home) Valve clearance timing adjustment on head of 2C engine.

Before I open my 2C's valve cover and adjust the valve clearance, does anyone can tell me how should I do it. Is it DYI? I've adjusted the valve clearance of a Misubishi 4DR5 but I haven't seen what the 2C's rocker and camshaft looks like so I'm not sure if I can do it.

Please help :)

Jan, there are no rockers, the camshaft acts directly onto the shimmed caps on the end of each valve, Adjustment, of the valve clearance is by fitting different sized shims. These shims are, generally, around the 2.8 + mm in thickness and, unless you have a supply of shims, there is not a lot you can do (unless the head is off, valves ground etc). What you can do, with the head in situ, is to measure, accurately, each valve clearance and check against the figures given in the engine manual. You will then need to buy the necessary shims from Toyota.

John, thanks a lot for sharing that valuable info :)

Anyone who can email me the picture of the shim, valves, springs, etc. before I open the valve cover. Thanks.

There's nothing to see, it's a very standard shim and bucket setup. At least the shims are on top of the buckets, so the cam doesn't have to come out...

BTW, are you having specific problems? Valve clearances don't alter on these things for years, and if anything they tighten up with time as the valve seat recesses.

IMO, if it is starting OK when cold and isn't too tappety when hot, the clearances are probably OK (the head expands as it heats, increasing the clearances)

Jan, I agree that there is not much to see, from a picture, that would not be revealed by a quick inspection with the cam cover off. However, if you have the engine manual, this will tell you, with illustrations, everything you need to know. The manual, part No RMO25E, only costs about £10 and can be orderd from your local Toyota dealer

Thanks guys for the advise.

What a releaf to know that the clearance doesn't change that easily. Actaully I don't have a cold starting problem nor an unusual engine noise. I just want to check it since I'm opening the valve cover to replace a leaky valve cover gasket.

I saw a scaned diagram at: http://www.mpvi.net/ia/pic.htm?pic=../id/0080a180.gif

Is item#13753 the shim you're refering to? Can you help me identify the other parts?

Sorry for the trouble guys. I'm just eager to learn something and do it myself whenever possible.

from the top, yes, on that diagram 13753 is the shim, simply a hardened disc but you have to get the right thickness, about £3 each from toyota i think. it sits in the top of the bucket which rests, inside its bore in the head, on the end of the valve stem. at the top of the valve spring are the two tiny collets inside their retainer. at the bottom is the valve stem oil seal 13711a. i don't recognise 13711d.

provided you can turn the camshaft you will be able to measure all the valve clearances easily by just sticking a feeler gauge in there. see rm025e for the spec, there's some leeway. if a gap is bad then you have to press down the edges of the bucket (difficult against the spring pressure) and pull the shim out with tweezers. measure the thickness of that shim and work out what thicknes you need it to be - or use the table in rm025e.

... also ... the rim of the bucket has a notch, or two, which is where you get your tweezers in unders the shim. If you get that far you must turn the bucket so that a notch is facing you in order to be able to grab the shim. But if you think a clearance is bad I would take advice here before changing anything - I think you can safely be out of spec up to a point.

Dave, I appreciate your help.

I'll be changing the valve cover gasket later on and do some valve clearance measurements. In case I find it out of specs, then I'll be seeking for your expert advise again.

Thanks to David and John also.

Jan, you didn't say which car you have but if it has EGR then you might consider removing it when you do this job. See discussions in Ace Answers. I think you may have to dismantle it to get the valve cover off anyway. Someone else might know.

Dave, thanks for another advise but it doesn't have an EGR. We don't have a law requiring it but we need to regularly tuneup our car to pass the emission test.

Oh, i forgot to tell you that my car is not a townie but a Toyota FX(Asian release only). The only similarity, I think, between your cars and mine is the engine which is a 2C(non-turbo). My engine has a vacuum pump on top and David Miller said that it is a newer version.

BTW, the factory manual is not available in any Toyota dealer here in the Philippines. They want me to bring my car to their shop but they charge 4 to 5 times more than the more competent shop I know. Anyway, I am doing the maintenance and minor repairs myself and this board of knowledge is very helpful to me. Keep it up guys. :)
