(Home) coolant leak

Hi All,

I have a slight coolant leak coming from the rear of my engine - 1991 2litre Turbo Diesel.

Currently it is dripping down and around the side of the Gearbox.

I've traced the flow of water upwards and it is dripping off a pipe that runs horizontally high up around the back of the engine (Cylinder head?).

I can't see where the fluid is coming from before it drips off the pipe (at a point where it is attached to the engine by a small bracket - mounted top left of the engine when viewed from the rear) - the pipe seems to be dry either side of the drip, however there is a small(ish) triangular shaped plate bolted onto the back of the engine just above this pipe and to my untrained eye it looks a little damp along the base. Could this be the source of the leak? Am I right in thinking that there may be a gasket under the triangular shaped plate and that this gasket has failed? - or should I be looking somewhere else for the source?

Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated

Well, it sounds like it's either that access cover (and yes, it has a gasket, but be wary, there's two shapes...) or more worryingly the head gasket- the HG resides directly under that cover.

Thanks for that David.

Although I was hoping that no-one would mention head gaskets!!

Think I'll see about replacing the gasket under the access cover first to see if that sorts it!

Regards
