(Home) alternator burnt out.... Need another

Hi all,
Had the dreaded Xmas light`s all go the other night, as well as the loud constant beep (like a microwave.... but a constant tone). After extensive searching (yet again) on this site, I packed it off to the mechanic (EMF Auto`s in Isle of Sheppey, Kent... Errol is very good) with a pile of printouts. He took the alternator off and sent it to an auto-elec to get checked out and refurbished, and it seems to be the culprit (not the regulator) as it`s motor has burned out... so it can`t be refurbished. He checked with Toyota for another and it`s £400 (!!!), so he said I should check with you guys etc and track down a used one.
So, I desperately need an alternator. Any help out there? Until it`s fixed I`m having to spend £30 a day driving to work and back when I`m on my block of shifts (as normally I crash out in the van on the other side of London where I work... unfortunatley the wife`s Rav4 isn`t that big to crash out in ).

Storm not sure if they do have one but they do stock a fair few parts on there shelfs so you never know.(There is an Ace there)
Give Abbey Breakers a call on (01322)347711 and find out.

Storm, if you are really desperate then you could also try BBC Spares try the link or WWW.bbcspares.com they can do you one for £80 if you need it quick.

Thanks guys, will try both tomorrow.

Any idea how I managed to burn out the alternator motor??

Just before the X`mas lights all came on, the fuel filter warning light came on first for a few minutes (intermittently) and I thought it may have been because I was running on fumes at the time. 15 min later and I managed to fill up but of course the whole light show was on by then.

Hi all,

I`ve found an alernator (thanks Dan!) at Abbey Breakers for £40 + vat, but they won`t let me pay for it over the phone and let a courier collect it (they say I could say it was never delivered).

I`m working for 5 days in Bucks at the moment and can`t get back to Kent until next wednesday.

Is there ANYONE I can pay that can pick up the alternator for me and take it to the isle of Sheppey? I`ll pay you for your time/petrol. I`ll do a website for you, create some home movie dvd`s, whatever you want. I`m using the wife`s car atm so she`s stuck at home and I`d like the car to get fixed asap so she can get out with the baby if she needs to.

Can`t believe they won`t post or let a courier collect it though.

Don't see the problem. Couriers should ask for a signature from the addressee upon delivery.

Sorry, can't help with picking it up.

np. I`ve ound out that they are over-cautious due to some fraud recently, so they`ll only let the person buying it pick stuff up.

I`ve had a talk to another guy there and got them to post it out to me instead (£65 inc vat/p&p). Only to my home though, not the garage. So I`ll take it to the garage on wednesday.

Just for other ppl`s reference, it`s a 4-pin round connector.

Glad you got your alternator on the way, (glad i could help you)

Hope it does the trick and you get the old Van back on the road soon.

Just had a call from Errol (mechanic). He put the new alternator on and the van drove well for a while, then came back with the same problem, so he wants me to get the regulator now as well. Any more idea`s as to where one might be? I`ve called Abbey Car Breakers and they`ll have a look tomorrow.

Fast not liking these vans when they go wrong :)

BBC spares have regulators at about £45.

I'm working on a similar "not charging" problem for someone else and have written a load of notes for Ace Answers which I'll publish in the Alternator folder tomorrow morning.

Hi all,

I filled out a form at http://www.247spares.co.uk/parts/ (click on any of the icons as they all go to the same place) and I`d had three places call me less than an hour later. I grabbed a regulator from this lot for £17 + vat + postage (@ £27 in the end)... and they`re posting it to the garage :) yay!

Hmm interesting, I used to regularly drive past this place. They don't list any Toyotas in their dismantling list so I guess you were lucky on the day to get something. Useful to note for the future.
