(Home) headlights for europe

Hello from Sunny Eastbourne!
I'm new to The Townie and am impressed so far .
Came to this site from AceAnswers and couldn't find my answer there.
The vehicle is a 1994 Super Extra 2.2td Auto and wasbought specifically for kids taxi and continental driving about 4 times a year.
I want to deflect the headlight beams for LH driving and read that the best temp solution is just to use black insulation tape to cover the ''clearly marked'' triangular/trapezoid area on the lens. The trouble is that i can find this ''clearly marked'' area!!
I have done this on other cars with sucess but as the townie heads cover most of the front of the vehicle, I'm stumped as to the exact position for the stickers .. can ayone help?
Cheers, Peter

Guessing what these '94 headlights look like, you're not going to find any other solution - no specially shaped yellow covers etc. So your aim should be to stick some black tape on in as convincing a shape as possible, then no-one will complain. All the black tape does is make your lights even dimmer, especially the offensive leftward part of the beam, leaving you in relative gloom!

Look at similiar headlights on other cars and get a feel for the general shape and position of the marked-out area. Then do some experiments at night parked facing a wall a few metres away, slide a lollypop-shaped piece of card around and find, for each light, where is most effective at quenching the bright area over on the left on the wall without blocking light on the right. Then do a really neat job of sticking on the tape and for all anyone knows you've done the usual thing and followed the marks on your lens.

Thanks Dave!
I'm glad it's groping around in the dark with a lollipop and not hunting new lenses !!
Btw, what is the asterisk against your post ?
and are there any jams in Sussex?

yes, ace owners sometimes have to boldly go etc.

the bok requires something in the subject field but often there's no point. asterisk is an it thing, it can mean "anything" and saves thinking of, and typing, anything else.

nearest to sussex was a one-day jam in the new forest. i'm happy to promote any sensible ace-friendly events/locations as jams, they don't have to involve camping, but someone (other than me) has to at least organise to the extent of knowing who intends coming and deciding whether there's enough to make it worthwhile, sorting out some logistics - e.g. directions, trying to make sure no-one's annoyed.

Hi again !
Don't know where you are in Sunny Sussex, but you probably know the festival of transport is held annually at Hellingly on the Hailsham to Heathfield road near here. Occurs to me that this is an ok location in a field away from the nimbys. Maybe someone experienced will comment ?

PS- Is it right that I don't have any turbo lights on mine.... bearing in mind it's a post revision model. There is nothing on the dash/rev counter and nothing in the display strip below either. AND the ''handbook'' doesn't list anything!
I thought maybe there wasn't a turbo till BBCman told me they're all turbos!.... I'm VERY green

The later models I believe have one turbo light in the cluster with a pictogram looking something like a fan in a square. But don't worry if you don't see it come on- it's an overboost warning signal...

Thanks David, I'll look for it ..

Headlights - I used beam divert stick on plastic pads that direct the dipped beam the other way, only loses a litle light, got them from local spares place.
Jams - you need to make people aware of where, when it is and what to expect, most importantly the likely cost. I organise the Bream one and it works on those camping pay reduced camping rate and those just visiting pay nothing. We talk Ace talk, find out what that little thingy does, or say didn't you know it does that! Have a laugh and a social get together.

OK - thanks, Clive ... I saw them at Halfords ..- £9.95 for 2 lollipop shaped pieces of stick-on plastic. I think I'll take a ''template'' tracing and make my own. Cheapskate!

I've taken my liteace to France the last 3 years running and have never adjusted my headlamps.
Why ! ( and this now feels like a leap of faith )
I read something, somewhere - - - - Yea I know !! that if you not in permanent residence in the country, i.e on holiday, while it's recommended, you don't have to make the adjustment. Another reason is that I travel during the summer when it's bright in the evenings - no need for headlights - if its dusk - sidelights only and by the time it's dark I've had a drink and would'nt be driving anyway.

I too have never bothered adjusting my headlamps when going to France but I recently read (something, somewhere again) of French police pulling over cars as they left the Channel Tunnel exit and fining those who had not tweaked theirs.
