I have an 84 Toyota Hiace. Every once in a while (perhaps when it rains) all my key does is light up the display panel, which rules out problems with battery. Every Mechanic says i have to wait til it happens so they can figure out the problem. However it hapens so randomly a mechanic is never around and I have to push start. Any ideas what the problem is?

What happens when you turn the key? Do the lights go out, or is there a loud click perhaps?

If there's a click but the starter doesn't turn, your best bet is to remove it and service the contacts inside the solenoid. They may need cleaned or replaced.
