(Home) tyre sizes

Hi all

I have had a look around in the archives on this but am still not quite clear: I have a 1991 Townace TD 2WD. It is fitted with 185R14C tyres all round. I will need to replace the front ones and wondered if it os ok to stick to this size (so I do not need to replace the back ones at this point)?

In addition: I currently put all tyres to 2.3 bar as per label on drivers door but understand it is recommeded to put more pressure in them ie 2.5 or 2.7?

No problem with 185R14 tyres. I use them on mine. As for tyre pressures, this subject has been discussed previously on numerous occassions. 2.3 bar or 33psi is far too low and will wear your tyres quicker. Run them at anything from 35 to 42 psi. I run mine at 40.

Hi Ian, well yeah but you probably live somewhere with nice smooth roads, where I live the roads outside the towns can get a bit rough and lowering the tyre pressure a bit helps to stop the teeth falling out sometimes!

Smooth roads? Far from it. I feel like a punk at a disco everytime I drive it. I've experimented with tyre pressures on and off over the past 5 years and I find that lower pressures don't make that much difference. I used 38psi for a long time but now just bang in 40 as it's a nice round number. I accept I can't get the comfort (apart from smooth motorways) so I settle for longer lasting tyres and a marginal improvement in fuel consumption instead.

With the hiace I've come to the conclusion that they are 'set up' to carry weight.
Had about 300 kg of gravel in the back some time ago and the ride was silky smooth even over bumps etc.
Normally its very poor.
I can't chuck 8 people in the back as ballast all the time so its just a case of get used to it.
I run 40psi too....bigger wheels/tyres may soften things some methinks....soundproofing too....but there is not too much scope to make a radical difference for most of us.....

Hi

thanks for all the answers. Have had new front tyres put on today. One of them (drivers side) was very worn on the inside so guess will need to get the wheel alignment checked next.
