(Home) diff oil type

Hallo,,I have some gearbox oil here, I think its 70/90. Is this suitable for 1992 towny or a thicker 90 grade instead? thanks Frank

Diff is Hypoid. As long as your fluid is EP, viscosity doesn't matter so much (I use a Comma synthetic 75/90. Suitable for hypoid drives, but as runny as water. great for the mpgs...)

Thankyou David. Am I correct in assuming you mean the thinner synthetic increases economy? Also, I rummaged around and found some more oil, vavoline sae90 diff oil. Says for limited slip diffs, passenger and commercial, however no reference to hypoid or EP. Down here in the colonies we might have different ratings? How much better economy? Not in furlongs per cupful please, but even though we are quite metric now, I still prefer mpgs to km/l.

If it's specifically for LSDs it mightn't be best choice for an open diff- different friction enhancement package.

If you can't find the Hypoid or EP terms, look for GL5 rating. there's no brass inside a toyota diff so nothing to worry about.

Economy-wise, it's hard to say. At your higher ambient temps the difference might be minimal. Certainly it's my experience that the rear axle runs 10-20c cooler with the slippery stuff inside.
