(Home) overheating 2c auto towny

At high speed and up hills especially. No loss of water, radiator is good and runs ok idling and low speed in the city, just ever so slightly highy temp. 10 days ago had belts/pump etc done and mechanic held viscous fan and said 'see how theres some resistance when you try to turn it, becomes stiffer when hot'. I see, said I and we finished up the job, everything good and no overheating. So now its running hotter and that resistance, is gone- its spins freely. Even at overtemp its easy to stop with a rag and stays stopped with minimal/hardly any holding. Is this kaput? Tried ace answers but couldnt open relavent looking folders, if someone could direct me, I may consider reconditioning viscous coupling as a s/hand one may last only another 10days. Many thanks Frank

kaput.

try your local dealer for 08816-03001, you'll need two vials. If this part number is no longer available, your local laboratory supply business should be able to help. According to

http://www.nichols.nu/tip482.htm

there are a couple of specs for the Toyota fluid ranging from 3000 to 10000 centistokes viscosity. So that's what to ask for...

Those symptoms do indicate a failing viscous coupling but, it is worth checking that the thermo coil, ie the device which heats up and operates the internal valve in the coupling, has not been dislodged or damaged during the recent work. It is on the front of the coupling, facing the radiator. Also, on Ace Answers, there are some of my images of the dismantled coupling and these might help you if you decide to dismantle and replace the viscous fluid.
If you are considering a new unit, the part No is T16210-64020 but, it costs around £130

Phoned the mechanic, he reckoned because used parts are cheap, and they come offin 10min, that I should source a good used one. I'll nip down to pick a part, they had four diesel townies with engines in. Navigating a answers and contacting toyota DOES sound like a mission, especially when pick a part only want nz$10(3pound). I'll be finished in an hour, if they have a good one. Thanks for the offer Jim, I'm in new zealand, as well as being far away our parts are cheaper. We only get crumbs for wages though, (and you get our best lamb, we get the cheap cuts!) regards Frank
