(Home) clutch / gear trouble-please advise

Hi All, Can anyone please shed any light on to me troubled head.
I own a 92 K Reg 2ltd TD Manual Townace 2wd
When i first start me townie (When the engine is completely cold) I have difficulty putting it in gear.
It feels like i have to force it into gear, but after you have first managed to ram in it gear it then changes fine. Also if you leave it running so the engine warms up a tad, then again it is fine.
The Clutch seems to have enough play on it and it doesn't slip.
Thought it might need some more gear box oil as once it has warmed up it changes gear as smooth as a smooth thing being smooth, but not being to mechanical i'm not to sure.
Any Suggestions much appreciated.
Dan

yup. Change the oil.

If that doesn't help, the synchros in the gearbox might be starting to wear.

Is it the same for all gears?

If your clutch is 'on the floor', meaning it starts to grab as soon as you're starting to lift foot and pedal is just starting to leave floor, you could try adjusting this so grab begins at least 50mm(2") pedal from floor. I'm not sure with the towny but this is normally a 5minute job easily achieved with two spanners lying on ones back with the front wheels driven upon a kerb or similar to increase crawl space. Get the missus to push clutch in and out you will see **** do not over adjust! can snap thingy, oh no, gearbox will need to be removed. As initially mentioned, only adjust if clutch is 'on the floor'

Nothing to adjust, though you could try bleeding the system?

Thanks all for your comments so far..

It is the same in all gears even reverse, but once the ol' van has warmed its fine.
It also seems that if you start it whilst it's in 1st gear (Foot on clutch as i dont wanna wack me neighbours car) then pull away as normall the gears then are fine. But from cold then into a gear is a propper struggle.

How much of a job is it for some-one who is not the best at mechanical things to drain and replace the gearbox oil.

Cheers Guys

Try pumping clutch pedal a few times before selecting gear. How high is your cold idle speed? Too high will cause selecting problems. Is your clutch on the floor?

Still reckon fluid or (worst case) synchros. Fluid change is easy. Ensure you can find the drain AND fill plugs, get sufficient of the correct oil, then drain out, and refill. Gear oil comes in squeezy bottles to make it easier to fill.

You'll likely need 3 litres of 75W90 GL4 or 5 gearbox oil, and as I recall the plugs (one at the side of the box, one at the bottom, require a 24mm spanner or socket.

Only slightly tricky bit here is recommending an oil. There are some superb fully-synthetic lubes out there that will certainly improve your fuel consumption and cold gearchanges *however* this same thinness might not suit your synchros when warmed up. Best go with a bog-standard ( but make sure it's 75w90, not 80w90, and definitely NOT hypoid/ EP) one and see if there's any improvenent...

Have tried pumping the pedal but with no result, i think i will go with David and change the gearbox oil.
It seems like the best option for now.
I will let you all know how i get on with this and if it doesn't work i will be buggin all you kind knowledgable guys again.

Cheers Guys keep up the good work..
