(Home) headlights

hi, ny townie 93 super xtra 2td failed mot. the headlights are faded yellow and emitting very little light.he said i need 2 new headkight units that are british type not japanesse . is he right or should i get a second opinion.also , if i do need them how much will they cost and who sells them? many thanks for any info, andy.

Plastic lenses can indeed pit and yellow over time or with the use of the incorrect (overpower/ non UV-cut) bulbs. If it's the outside you can polish then with Tcut or similar, a bit of elbow grease will sort it. If it's the plastic itself gone opaque you're stuffed.

The beam pattern matches the Euro- standard regardless of the markings , so even if European light units *were* available they'd be no different.
If it was me I would be asking what the lamps failed on- lux level, pattern, aiming, or flare. If it's an intensity or flare issue it is quite possible that a polish of the lenses and a NEW pair of bulbs (preferably the +30% Xenon variety, but definitely NOT the coloured, coated variety...)will get you within spec.

Is this an MOT at a garage or are you in Northern Ireland, BTW?

I brought a second hand set that were better than mine passed mot no problem, cost £40 pair look for scrapper with good lights.
