(Home) diesel and petrol transmissions

Does anyone know if a transmission from a petrol model is compatible with a turbo diesel?

I have an 89 Master Ace with an auto box and want to convert it to a manual and was wondering if I have to find a gear box from a diesel, as the petrol models are more plentiful in Canada.

Thanks in advance,

Rich

Bellhousings differ to start with, so you'll need the bellhousing from a 2C manual regardless. The internal ratios mightn't suit, and you'll certainly have to change the final drive and propshaft, plus remove the dash to change the pedalbox. The underseat area will likely have to be replaced or modded to accept the new selector assy.

Loadsa hassles...

The Auto box has the same number in mine as the US petrol auto vans - so the actual box is the same.

As Dave mentioned though the bellhousing will possibly (Probably???) be different.

You need to get the number off a manual Townie's ID plate and compare that to a Petrol van plate to see if it is the same box, then actually get a look at one to see if the bellhousing is different.
Then there is always the possibility that the ratios will be different too, although I believe that the ID numbers for the trans also ID the ratios - but I could be wrong on that.

Personally I don't think it is worth the effort - the auto is fine and in my opinion better suited to the engine.
It works well off road too!

Dave.
