(Home) losing water

2.0 td 1991 2wd townie runs fine locally went over penines M62 about 40 miles by the time I got there heater not as hot checked water lost approx. 4.5 pints on the way back same thing heater not as powerful or nearly cold checked water lost 4 pints. After that driving local approx. 80 miles for 3 days no problem. Checked everywhere for leaks none. I think the water is coming out from overflow. Changed cap original Toyota few weeks ago.

happens to me as well, evaporation? just plain odd, althoough did see a small paddle of water on the ground one day but could not find any leak spot.

Have a pressure test done on the system hot AND cold to chase any tiny leaks. When you work'em hard they get hot, and any water that leaks out steams off. On a long hard slog even quite a small leak can lose enough coolant to stop the heater (and will kill the head a short time after...) and as it cools down the same leak will stop the system from replenishing.

In normal use, the filler neck should be full each morning.

You'll want to check the end tanks of the rad for leaks, they become porous over time, plus any roughness in the sealing surfaces of the filler neck can cause problems...

Have you modified your temperature gauge yet? It won't tell until it's too late, you that the coolant loss has led to overheating.

true.

How do I do that?

See Ace Answers > Cooling & Heating > Temperature gauge

After checking everywhere for leaks on the ramp here there eveywhere Mechanic said must open for head testing. Took car to him and he said it's not building pressure while he was filling water he realised that the two top hoses on the radiator were wrong way round ( previous owner ) Changed them round and hey presto no more leaks and interestingly power is pack. She drives beatifully now.
