(Home) Engine (2CT) shut-off shake

I have a 1989 Master Ace Surf Grand Saloon, and when I turn the engine off, it gives a nasty shake. Others I have been in do not do this - any ideas where I should look to find the problem?

Thanks in advance...

Petrol or diesel? Manual or auto, and if an auto, what position do you have the selector in when you turn off?

It is a 2CT diesel autoamtic, and when I turn it off in park, and it gives a pretty good shake as the engine winds down. Is there a fuel cut and/or air intake cut that may not be functioning properly?

Nope, there's no air intake valve on these. You could certainly check the fuel solenoid valve (sticks up at the rear of the pump, same as a Bosch VE- pump). Does it sound like it's just winding down, or is it kicking back heavily? Might be worth checking the injection timing too.

Of course, it could just be a duff engine mount. Easy to check...

You in Canada?

It is a pretty strong kick - rattling the doors and moving the whole van.

I am quite sure that the fuel pump timing is correct - I checked the timing marks several times when I replaced the head after the timing belt broke at 104 000 kms. Also, the shake was there before and after the head replacement.

To check the sloenoid, should I hear it click when the ignition switch is turned on and off?

I will check that and the engine mount tonight...

As for my place of residence, I do live in Canada. I was particularly worried about the repair cost of the van after reading some of the messages posted here, and considering that I have to get the parts from Japan. As it turns out, I got a used head (less than 100 000kms) with cam (mine was in three pcs) intake manifold, and injectors with a Toyota gasket set for $450 CAD. That is cheaper than a used head and gasket set for a similarly aged Honda Civic, which is very common here. What a relief that was!

Thanks for your help...

You'll need to pull the solenoid and look at it's plunger. Clicking or not, it might be leaking at it's seat.
On the timing issue, I'm not talking about the marks on the pulleys, rather the plunger position. Same procedure applies to older VW diesels, so your local diesel shop will have the tools (dial gauge and adaptor). Even with all the pulleys lined up the pump position could be out of tolerance. Can't see that causing your problem really tho, unless it's far enough out to cause other symptons...

i had this when i was messing with the egr and disconnected a vac tube (cant remember which one but it controlled a post egr flap in the intake i think).
i would check all your vac tubes for security or hidden splits. it was on a 2.8 deisel hiace, but likely to be the cause on yours maybe
