I have the opportunity to purchase a J registration townace extra with a turbo diesel engine.It is not running at the moment because the owner says that the cold start valve is leaking.He claims that a blanking plate can be bought for £15 and this will cure the problem.Can anyone tell me if this is true and can the engine work without this valve?

He could be talking about either the timing advance cover, or the cold-start thermowax jobbie. You could do without the thermowax, but it'd run rough when cold. Timing cover is essential.
