(Home) auto g/box selector

Hi,I have just purchased 2 Space cruisers, both F reg, with the idea of making one good from 2 bad.I have chosen the best and was sorting this out when I found the kickdown cable was hanging loose. It turned out it was snapped halfway down. Not too much of a problem there I thought until I looked underneath. At some point the threaded rod that comes out of the box with the selector on the end had been sheared and was very slack. The people who had it at the time had fixed it by chucking some chemical metal on the end. What I need to know is,is it possible to change just this rod?and if it is how would a layman go about this?
Thank you in advance,Alan

Are you talking about the actual gearchange shaft that runs accross the width of the 'box, or a part of the selector lever/ cable attachment? Is the nut on the end of the inhibitor switch tight? All the parts are available seperately as long as you can identify them.

And do you need a kickdown cable as well? The sump and possibly the valve body have to be removed to access the cam it attaches to...

Hi David,I think it is the actual shaft itself. It is a rod with a threaded end that passes through the side of the box and slots through to the other side.I do need to change the kickdown cable aswell.
I have already removed the sump and the valve body. That is if the valve body is the section that is held in by a load of 10mm bolts.
I just can't figure out how I can get the shaft out to exchange them

Well, it's all in the US manual if you download it, but briefly you gotta remove the inhibitor, tap out a roll pin to free up the shaft from the manual lever on it and then slide it out.
p/no is (I believe) 35561-40010

but I wonder if the problem is actually with it's detent? Are gears selectable?

HI,gears are selectable as far as I know.I only actually moved it on the driveway so 1st and reverse were used.
Where would I download the manual from.I've got a Tarago manual but it tells you to seek a Toyota dealer for them to work on it.The reason for removing the valve body is to fit a new detent cable.
The shaft needs to be removed as it is sheared and all they have done to hold selector lever to shaft is stick some chemical metal or some such muck on it as there is not enough thread to fit a nut back on.

If it's only the end thread that's gone and the flats on the shaft still engage the lever, you might be able to centre-drill and tap the remains of the shaft for a bolt.
The manual you seek is on the US site, there's a link in the archives...
