(Home) head rebuilt

Having replaced the cylinder head, bolts, gaskets, timing belt, thermostat, radiator cap.(liteace 2ct turbo diesel),she been running fine the last week, infact i noticed a considerable improvement in the engine, but i have one small problem she doesn,t seem to syphon back the amount that she expands into the expansion bottle, but in removing the radiator cap there seems to be no build up of air and i would say that see takes about a cup full to fill to the neck. Any idea? , your advise would be most helful.

You've probably still got a leak somewhere. Admittedly if it's only a cupful it's nothing to worry about, but check carefully just in case it's something that wants to get worse. I'd check the rad's endtanks carefully, plus any paper gasket's you've disturbed. Did you use a pattern thermostat seal perhaps?- some of then are a bit loose...

Also check the hoses that run from the filler neck to the expansion bottle and the one inside the bottle and the expansion bottle cap. They all have to be a tight fit or the coolant won't pull back when cooling down.

the new radiator cap which seemed rather loose to me i replaced with the old one and that seems to have done the trick.water when i checked it this morning was right up to the top, hopefully that is my end to the problem and maybe i get the original from toyota as the one i got from the local factors for £4.00 was the spring type and as i say seemed quite loose in fitting.
thanks again for everyones help!!!!!!.

now if i was a mechanic i would have to do the 'sharp intake of breath and shaking of head thing' - "you don't want to buy a cheap nippon cap from the local factors mate, they're no good. you need the proper toyota one! you didn't read the advice in the archives did you?" :-)

Having done all that work and got it running well you don't want a tiny coolant leak to cause a new crisis. Fit the Ace Answers temp gauge modification now. It won't stop a leak but it will stop you from ignoring even a small increase in head temperature.
