(Home) alternator rebuild

Had the alternator from my 1988 cruiser rebuilt today as it had gone up the creek.

So new bits to make it work brushes and regulator and bearings and all nice and shiney to boot.

Was all done in the workshop and replaced all I had to do was to pay and drive away.

Cost of £60 was this reasonable chaps ??

Sounds good to me. I just paid about the same to have a seized one rebuilt. One bearing was replaced and a stator and various internal damage caused by that bearing shattering was repaired. And I had to take it off the car myself.

I still reckon that it was worth it to have someone who knows these things cast an experienced eye over it. After all the breakers wanted £125 + VAT just for a scrapper, as it comes.

They want how much??

There was a bloke on eBay last month selling three items..a starter motor..a carburettor and an alternator start price 99p...they all sold for just over a pound each.

The bloke live in the medway towns. Another sold a complete engine and gearbox petrol/manual that he drove 120 miles home as he just wanted the towbar for £26 but it was in the vehicle and you had to take that as well. He said the engine was top notch.

I suppose it would be wise to buy things before you need them ?

But now you are back in Triumph Spitfire territory. Been there, done that, and far prefer the reliability of a Toyota.

The £125 quote was from Dewsbury via one of those online breaker broker services. I was a bit stunned too as the last time I got an alternator from a scrappie I paid a fiver as I remember.

A fiver!! Boy you've got a long memory!

It wasn't more than five or six years ago but it was for a *cough* Renault 9 *cough* at one of the old fashioned bring-your-own-spanners scrappies which are alas a dying breed.
