(Home) radiator rust and anti-rust

I think my radiator have rust. I'm thinking of purchasing anti-rust but I don't know how to apply it and how effective it is. Can anyone give me directions? Thanks.

Unlikely, the rad is brass, not steel...

- (#637) David Miller, 13 Apr 05 01:42

Then, what part of the engine does the anti-rust prevents for rusting?

- (#637) Jeffrey, 13 Apr 05 05:21

tell us more about the product. Website addy? These type of products are usually for bodywork.

- (#637) Ian Dunse (Derbs), 13 Apr 05 06:30

this product is mainly for blocks and heads made of iron that build up a sludge which in turn blocks radiators.

There's really lot anti-rust and coolant in the market today. I'm thinking of getting the prestone anti-rust because i have been using their heavy-duty brake fluid for quite awhile now.

- (#637) Jeffrey, 14 Apr 05 00:57

ALL of todays coolants have anti-corrosion additives. Funny tho, I looked on the website and didn't see an "Anti-rust" product. Which of their choice of antifreezes were you thinking of, and have you confirmed the suitability of it's additive technology with the deposits in your engine- some of the newest coolants (like the VW G12 product and equivalents) throw a heavy scale-like sludge on contact with older coolants and residues...

- (#637) David Miller, 14 Apr 05 01:47

there's an anti-rust product there. prestone super anti-rust <www.prestone.com>. i'll be not needing any anti-freeze because i'm living in a tropical country.

=)

- (#637) Jeffrey, 14 Apr 05 06:28

Ahh, now I understand. It would've helped if you had posted your location. Yes, you'll get away with a simple anticorrosive; whatever is sold locally to your would be fine I'm sure.

You'll find most antifreezes have the title "... and summer coolant" to cover their use all year round.

Sorry to have got the run around Jeffery, I knew exactly what you meant by anti-rust, but it seems others enjoy trying to make you look stupid because english is not your natural tongue. Well done for keeping you hat on. Dont take it personally, others have had to put up with this pratish behavior, and false recommendations given to others, who for reasons normally associated with the old boys club, are not presently in the clubhouse, brown nosing the right people. Its a shame this site has been hijacked by knowledgable abusive types who need the smallest invitation to push others about to feel good..... If you suspect blockages in radiator you can have it pressure flushed. Costs money, or if you take it out yourself, you can fill it with water from hose and shake it all around.ps Descale engine first or clean radiator may suffer deposits from undescaled engine...Back to your radiator out of car. Cap the hose connections and water and/or a descaling additive, especially turning upside down. OR 'in situation' (unremoved in car) add a descaler, then flush system with garden hose until water runs clear. I usually just run engine till hot, pull top hose off radiator, let engine pump hot water out while filling radiator with clear water hose. Once water runs clear, slip hose back on let water heat again to running temp, pull top hose off rad. and fill top of radiator with garden hose again till clear from engine. Repeat for up to an hour. I've found some systems have needed this procedure many times to have a clear running water out from top of engine. Much easier. A visual inspection of rad. condition should tell you if rad. needs replacement or repair. If exterior looks good, and water/coolant looks dirty, flushing cooling system will improve things. If radiator needs removal, flush engine with old raiator first. Should prevent scale from engine entering new radiator. Hope this helps

I've had a read of the Prestone Anti-Rust web page. I says that it is for the treatment of neglected engines and will treat the internals for corrosion until the system can be filled with a coolant mix.
My brother lived in Cyprus and used a summer mix from the local car shop, he said it looked and smelt like normal antifreeze as we know it in the UK.
Antifreeze is the wrong name it is a coolant addative, that raises the boiling point of water and also lowers the freezing point, a bonus for cold climates. The important bit for all our engines is the raised boiling point! You should be able to get some Prestone coolant mix to keep your engine cooler and rust free.

Frank: My english ain't that bad!?! Just need more pratice... thanks anyway for the instruction of flushing my radiator. Should I open the drain plug when I flush the radiator or should i run my engine and let the water evaporate?

Clive: I'm able to see trace of rust inside the radiator by just looking at the hole but water stays clear... thanks for the info... i think i'll by townie a coolant and anti-rust and let the our local garage handle everything.

Frank, may I ask what you're smoking, and exactly who your derogatory comments are aimed at?

This is a UK site for mostly UK owners. The OP didn't post his location so as I'm not a mindreader I assumed he was in the UK. Silly me...

"pratish behavior"... "false recommendations"..."brown nosing"...

nice :(

I'm not sure whether your swipe was aimed at me, David or both but I can assure you that neither David nor I are in the habit of putting people down due to their poor English. We have both been around since the creation of this site over 5 years ago and I think our track record is pretty sound judging by the thanks we have received from many over the years.

It is a little galling to spend time responding to posts that give very little or spurious information when if only the person posting would give a good description of their vehicle and requirements from the start, the remedy could be hit in one go.

We may know a bit about Townaces and can have a good crack at trying to guess at an underlying request but for my part I haven't mastered the art of ESP yet.

In Jeffrey's case I wouldn't have known his native tongue was not English from his post. It was far better than some Brits that miss words and use mobile phone text-speak. Consequently believing he was English we naturally assumed he was a Brit so didn't understand the context of the request - sorry Jeffrey.

I take exception at 'knowledgable abusive types'. I can do abusive but not on this site. For "pratish behaviour, false recommendations and brown nosing and abusive behaviour" I would have to refer you to one of the 'chav' type sites. I like to think we are above that kind of behaviour here.

Having bought my Townace in Nov 2004 I haven't had time to become a site veteran. However, having systematically ploughed through the darkest corners of this site, I have always been able to find the answer to just about every knock & thud, the photo of every nut and bolt, and just the right words of encouragement. Two names in particular appear in just about every thread. Without Ian and David the site would flounder. Thanks to them the site continues serve its purpose.
Frank ironically appears to be suffering from sudden overheating. Not sure if this is due to lack of attention or perhaps design fault, but perhaps if he takes time to peruse Ian & David contributions rather than knocking them he might be able to sort himself out.
Thanks Ian, thanks David, good luck Franck

regards

Nick

I sincerely trust that those many knowledgeable contributors who, over the years have willingly offered splendid advice and assistance, given, always, without a hint of superiority, on this gem of a site, will not be put off by comments of such a puerile and infantile nature. If this site has been "hijacked" then we are, indeed, very fortunate

Come on guy's, can't you all just shake dicks and make up? Coz don't forget, at the end of the day your all just a bunch of wankers.

This is just a test to see if I can post pictures via an outside URL.....

Sorry guys I thought I had scrolled down to the bottom of the page but I was so taken aback by Franks outburst that I must have made that obvious mistake.

I was trying to find out if I could taker a photo of my carb and post it because it seems to be different from those which I have been sent.

But my comments on this thread are in unison with others and show real surprise at Frank's untimely and unnecessary outburst.

I for one never realised that the poster was not from the UK and I assumed that he was talking about anti corrosives formulated for iron blocks and iron heads which do tend to rust and make blocking sludge and the usual remedy is to pressure flush the whole system through the rad and out from the block drain.

Again this highlights the need for identifying the posters location as we all find that we have different meanings for some words or descriptions.

Maybe it is a lesson we can all learn that these forums are not for personal insults, you can do that by email if you think it's necessay not on a public board.

I have been messing with engines since the end of WW2 and I would not mislead anyone deliberately that asked for help.
