(Home) window sealing rubbers

Not often I post a question on here nowadays, but here's one I've never seen asked before.

Have any of you had a problem with your 15 year old Japanese rubber shrinking? The rubber surrounds to the front & rear screen have seemed to shrink, causing them to pull out at the corners, have any of you managed to get them back into place? (I've tried, but they are stronger than me). If you have, what's the trick?

Hope someones got a solution for me.

Kind regards Rob.

Hello Rob
I had this problem a while ago. Slide the window to fully open (may need the channel cleaning out). Carefully pull rubber out from top corner to bottom corner. When released, tug the bottom part of the rubber gently from under the glass. 1cm should be enough. Now refit the rubber starting from the top corner tapping right into the corner with your hand and work down. Same to bottom corner. When done you will have a 1cm (ish) gap at the bottom centre but it's not a problem. Note that on some windows I've seen, the join has been elsewhere (side or top) Just follow the same procedure. It's a little fiddly doing the winow half that doesn't have a join. You just release the rubber fmom the other side and pull through.. Good Luck Ray

Last year I noticed the plastic corners did not quite cover the ends of the screen seal and the bottom cross piece, which is just a tidy. I took the bottom one out put it in hot water and refitted, it was ok for a while now shrunk again. I think I'll do it again and put a dab of impact adhesive at each end to keep it there.
Don't know what to do with screen seal.

Rob, I have had no trouble with the front screen but, the rear (tailgate)glass securing moulding definitely does seem to shrink. My only remedy was to pull a short section of the the moulding out, at the bottom of the screen, cut it through, and work the two seperate "ends" back towards the corners of the screen, leaving a short gap between the cut ends.
I then let in a small section of window rubber moulding (from the scrapyard), well plastered it with black window seal compound, and pressed it into the gap. It doesn't stand close inspection but, it seems to have kept the moulding more fimly located and not pulling away from the glass at the corners.

Common problem with the rear window rubber, worse with temperature. Remove both sides at the bottom, pull to stretch, refit...
