(Home) cambelt - service time

just a quick one - can anyone tell me the service interval for the cambelt on 2CT engines?. mine has been onnow for 3 years and approx 80k miles, feel it might be ready to change but mechanic friend said they are usually good for 5 years or 100k on most vehicles.

100,000 km or 62,500 miles

Pete, Toyota's recommendation is a change at 100km.(60k miles). Did you mean 80K kilometres when you mentioned 80K miles ? If your figure IS miles, then you are a bit over Toyota's recommendation. I stand to be corrected but, I am not sure that the 2C engine belt does suffer from failure if pushed to the limit, and, given the quality of most of the Toyota components, your friend's opinion might be right but, I should think it would be unwise to take it to 100k miles when Toyota say 60k miles. However, if yours is a diesel, this is an interference engine and, a belt break could have catastrophic, and very expensive, consequences. Also, at this time of the year, with the hot weather coming (?) the belt change operation gives an opportunity to check all those difficult to get at hose connections, thermostat, radiator etc.

Your friend is speaking of petrol engines methinks. Ony a few of the very latest diesels, with the most modern belt and tensioner technology can make it to 100k miles.
Remember also that belts degrade with time as well as mileage...

thx to all for the speedy response, yes John i did mean 80k kilometers, knew id put wrong measure as soon as i pushed enter, d'oh. Think i will start to plan a weekend soon to get it done, where is the thermostat at as ive never changed it in 4 years, not having any probs with it !!!!!!!!!!, but if its a pig to get at i may as well take the chance to look at it while ive got the motor down.

Pete. Unusually, the thermostat is on the return side of the coolant system. Follow the big hose, from the bottom of the radiator, and you will find the thermostat secured inside the block, under the neck of the aluminium spigot which the hose clips onto. It's general location is just under the injection pump.
