Yes, its normal for that light to go out, indicating that the engine is ready to start, between 1 (warm) and 5 (cold) seconds after you turn the key.

so why does the light go out that quick when the reason for the light is to let you know the glowplugs are hot...it takes 7 to 10 seconds for them to get hot...

The plugs stay on after the light goes off...

do they stay on after the engine has started???

- (#808) andy, 23 Apr 05 04:55

Can do, at a lower voltage tho. Depends on coolant temp...

- (#808) David Miller, 23 Apr 05 08:13

sorry for the delay..
yes i still have power to g/p but the light goes out after a second, for any diesel this is not he norm..unless the engine is hot. something that dave said "Depends on coolant temp...".....i wonder.
how easy it it to test the temp sensor???
maybe its faulty and thats why it is giving of a false reading???

Coolant sensor is a bugger to get at. It's on the side of the block, behind the injection pump, with a water pipe running in front of it.
Specifications are in the manual, as are GP delay times.

If power is being supplied to the GPs for a sensible amount of time (when cold) before the relay clicks off- 20 or 30 secs IIRC- it's possible that your light problem is something within the GP controller. On a townie w/ EGR, that's an ECU the same size as the average fuel injected car's one. Leave well alone.

come on mr Miller wheres your sence of adventure !!
ecu's were the bain of my life at one time(bmw race team)..unfortunately a bit out of practice now and no laptop to repair. so will leave it alone..
its just a small nigling problem that the wife can live with,, she probebly dosen't even know what its for ! her last diesel car was direct injection so no glowplug timer...
thanks for your help so far
and no dought you and the others can help me again soon

Sense of adventure? Me? The one with the EEPROM burner and chip sockets on order for my HDI? Nope. You're thinking of someone else...

- (#808) David Miller, 24 Apr 05 03:13

Dave,

The EEPROM burner sounds interesting, are you going to remap the Zuki yourself, or have you got some preprepared maps for different power ratings already programmed in the system. Incidentally, is your HDi running the Bosch EDC15C management system, or the rather crappy Siemens SID801, and will your burner/remap unit do the Siemens systems?

Only reason I ask is that I'm lumbered with the Siemens management on my 406 & would be interested in getting a few more horses out of it, as I'm now bored with the standard (lack of) power delivery. Be interested in your results.

Regards Rob.

It's Bosch, thankfully, Rob. It's already been chipped by Upsolute, but the program isn't perfect, neither is the local support. So a friend of a friend in Poland is going to prepare maps based on my requests.

Siemens can be chipped, but it's less popular. There's a chap on Ebay who gets good reviews, or you could go down the tuning box route. If that interests you, there's even a way of approximating the action of a TB by using a couple of resistors. I can give you more details if you want...
