(Home) cruiser carburettor 1988 manual

My ongoing problem is still with me even after Ian kindly sent me all the piccies of the carb from his
manual.

My carb does not match any of his pix.

To recap.....I had a tickover around 1000rpm before my alternator was repaired and no autochoke.

After the alternator was repaired I had 2000rpm on cold start but richer fuel mixture, after warm up the revs dropped to 500rpm although the engine keeps running it is very hesitant and uneven. If I increase the revs by the accelerator cable to 800rpm the engine runs qjuite smoothly.

I spent almost three hours trying to find somewhere to adjust this.

The only markings I can find on the carb in white paint is 3Y. I cannot find a tickover adjustment anywhere.

Looking from the passenger side of the carb, the only adjustment is a sprung screw that adjustst off of the cam plate fixed to the vacuum solenoid but this does not affect the tickover only the acceleration as the vacuum is pulling all the time and the screw does no meet the cam plate.

There is nothing else this side of the carb.

Looking at the carb from the drivers side there are two adjusters. one on the left is a sprung hex head with shallow cross-cut in the head ...screwing this in and out does not affect the revs only the mixture
the other adjustment is a sealed entry and I would assume is for the emmissions control.

I even attempted to try and control it by adjusting the accelerator cable but that is not constant.

I have checked all the fuses and the electrician tells me that my alternator is working pefectly.

So where oh where do you control the tickover revs from please ????

That should read that I had 2000rpm but NO richer mixture aand I have checked all the fuses and they are all okay.

sitting in the drivers seat look down at the side of the carb nearest you there is what looks like a 14 mill nut with a cross screw slot this will adjust tickover I have to turn mine quite aweay before you notice differance
(my carb is not like us manuals either)
hope it helps

Cheers Jon....I did screw that in but it seemed to maker no dofference there was too much engine vibration to keep in the screw driver on the nut so had to use a socket.

I will give it another go and see what happens.

BUT nothing was touched when the alternator was repaired so I don't know why the tickover has altered.

could the auto choke be coming off to? quickly
at the back of the choke is a black round thingy there are little line marks on the top of the carb and 1 on the black plastic when new set in middle after a while the spring wheres so as to be adjusted mine is set two lines past midle to wards driver

I am looking at a carb I replaced on mine and there ar no other sdjustments on it

Rik, just to clarify. That section I sent you for the carb was taken from the 2Y/3Y Toyota engine manual as applicable to the UK market SpaceCruiser, not the US Van manual. I'm surprised your carb isn't covered which makes one wonder what exactly is fitted to your vehicle. I'm sorry I can't remember from memory as it's 12 years since I sold my Spacie.

Your best bet is to follow advice from current SpaceCruiser owners like Jon. As Jon says, the advanced choke could be failing but it's usually the other way - it usually sticks on after warming up.

I'm surprised you can't find the idle adjustment screw although I did have a similar problem after haing a Webber fitted to a HiAce a few years back. Maybe it has a plastic collar/cover fitted to prevent diy adjustment (a ploy used a while back on carbs). Is there a protrusion that could fit the bill? You would need to break the plastic seal to get at the screw. I've also seen odd adjusters instead of a screw head such as an allen key or torx.

Ian as I am now quite familiar with this b... carb I realise that you did send a pix of my actual carb.

This is it...

But the hex headed screw on the left seemed to make no difference and the one on the right is shrouded and sealed.

I shall have another go at the Hex headed one and screw it rigfht home and see if it makes any difference.

Just wish to know if it was possible if Ian could post any pictures out of his manual for spacecruiser wiring loom. I need to look at connection for altanater to battery . I have a stray wire coming off the loom near the battery. Thanks

Carb -
The covered screw as you have found is the one, but why has it gone so far off the boil?
Best advice is get it tuned, you may get it running but emissions may be way off.

Loose connection -
There are two (3?) small guage wires that also attached to the battery + post - one is the alternator recharge. If you have three lights on the dash the floating one is it.
