(Home) power steering Townie

no doubt the symptoms will be in the archives with many other little gems.

i took the new-to-me townie down to the car wash to get rid of some of the grime this morning.
on start up i went into reverse without a clonk, as there was no revs on and i turned the wheel, i immediately felt resistance as if i was on full lock and the wheel would not turn, but it felt like i went over a few very large pebbles and then it turned quite easily but when i changed to opposite lock the same thing happened.

this only seems to do it when i am stopped. it is perfectly okay once i am moving but i would hate this to happen when i was moving at speed.

i shall investigate but could it be low on fluid or the belt needing adjustment? has anyone experienced this before. ??

belt. Read John Davis's recent query...

Yes Rik, In my case it was the belt as David had diagnosed, though I cannot see my original postings.
I had exactly the same symptons as you have described and, had read more into it than I should. I was quite ready to strip or replace the rack. I had previously tested the belt, by reaching from underneath, and had decided that it's tension was OK. However, I think it needs to be quite tight in order to avoid slippage at full travel of the rack. It cured the problem for me but, it does mean that the floor pan has to come out to do the job effectively. The fluid is important and, while I was at it, I did an almost complete change. The USA van site's information is especially helpful and there are lots of PDF downloads, including the "steering" chapter
