(Home) Coolant loss and overheating

I bought a '94 2.2L 4wd Royal Lounge townie 2yrs ago. It's been great and thanks to your fantastic site I've been able to keep going trouble free. I've recently started losing water out of the expansion tank. At first it needed water every 2 wks and then down to bi- weekly top ups. It has no leaks and I've flushed the system, the final stage of this has been the temp gauge moving above the point it normally seems to be glued to. I removed and tested the thermostat seems to work OK when tested, I then tried it without the stat in and found that although it takes longer to atain normal temp it still o'heats after about 10kms. I have bubbles in the filler pipe which would indicate a H'gasket problem but I have no water in oil,or oil in water. The exhaust is also free of H2o and it runs just fine. I've almost convinced myself that it must be the gasket. I've read all the O'heating stuff on this site and think of any other tests that I can undertake short of pulling the head off. I would welcome any suggestions as removing the head looks like a duanting task. It's done about 190000kms if it turns out the job needs doing should I looking at having things like the turbo/injectors serviced while Im at or just wait until they fail. If anything thats worth looking while it's in bits I'd love to know. I'm in Australia, so if anyone knows where I can get an engine manual I would love to know. Thanks in advance.

So you've read about all the other tests, but have you done them? Have you replaced the rad cap, done hot and cold pressure tests, and checked the fan coupling?

Only after these steps can you be sure that it's a head or gasket problem.

Pulling the head is straightforward, and if the vehicle is otherwise running OK I'd probably leave turbo and injectors alone.

Michael...

have you tried these guys down your end...

They may have something lurking about or put you in touch...

Regards.

Hi Michael
Hav a look at the thread I put on earlier, and see if you can borrow a pressure tester as I did.
I was having the same problem, but on stripping had a cracked head.
I hope yours is only a gasket.
It took me about three hours to strip off the head, not to bad to do as Dave told you.
Best of luck.

Any special tools for getting the head off?

- (#1041) head boy, 1 May 05 17:21

Nope, other than the head bolts on later models needing a 12- point 14mm socket (warning you, just in case you have a pricey set of 6-point surface drive jobbies or similar...)

A C-shaped obstruction spanner has been recommended for getting the manifold off the turbo. 14mm I think.

Unable to get one quickly I got my head off with a struggle without opening that joint. But I've now bought that spanner for next time - ?!

I found a short reach 14mm ratchet spanner did the job nicely.

Sorry, my comment was for 2.0L 2CT engine and this thread was started about a 2.2L engine.

David Coombs (see Ace Answers > Parts) will usually supply the RM025E engine manual for the 2CT, and any other Ace Toyota parts, by mail order to any country.

Same engine, Dave. Only the stroke differs...
