(Home) gearbox noise

Hi,
Ive just purchased a 1987 super extra 4x4 which Im well pleased with, however the gearbox (automatic)changes up very strangely you have to rev the engine quite hard then back off slightly and the box will change up,there is a loud knocking noise from the gearbox which is speed related ie noise quickens the faster you go apparently been like this for 3 years.Anyone have any ideas or a second hand gearbox please.

Try some simple checks before investing in a new gearbox:
1. gear change - adjust the cable as per instructions as to be found in the archives. I've found (and concurred by others) that a bit of slack is required in the cable, despite what is said in the manual.

2. Check the state and level of the gearbox fluid. Should be a reddy brown rather than a gungy browny-black. Check level on dipstick when engine hot and after a few changes between gears.

I'd definitely change the fluid. Noises aren't good, and as the gearchange is affected I'd be wondering about the main governor (at the rear of the tranny).
