(Home) sticking boost compensator ( was strange turbo behaviour)

Hi David,

It seems that our thread got purged - I am the Master Ace that had the turbo surges, you recommeded that I install a pressure guage, which shows that I am getting about 7.75 lbs boost, and you said that I could turn the boost comp. diaphram approx 5 degrees and that I should check the pin that rides on the diaphram shaft for sticking, and it does.

When I open the throttle, the governor(?) pin comes out, and then when I push it back using a screw driver, it takes some force, then it will retract. The shaft guide was oily, but I added some oil to it and tries to work that pin back and forth to free it up. It seems to have improved, although it does not move smoothly.

That would explain the sudden power increases / decreases that we experience. Is there a way to free up the governor pin?

Thanks for your time

Richard

Richard,
sounds like you might just have it then. It will always be a little sticky but should move smoothly. IIRC if you press on the pin whilst holding the throttle full open the pin shoud retract against a spring. If it does so and returns by itself, I'd say it should be OK. To strip it for any additional cleaning would require lifting the top off the pump, removing the "reverse lever" that the pin acts on, then the pin can be withdrawn through the access port. This is all in RM025E, if you have it?

Maybe drain the oil out of the guide, flush it out with carb cleaner and use some nice slippery synthetic oil? Does the pin look clean, BTW? You can pull it out into the guide a little using a pair of longnosed pliers if you want to see more of it...
