(Home) hiace alternator... Help needed

Hi,

I'm new to my Hiace.... My alternator is not charging the battery but the warning light doesn't light... any ideas???

I think i'm going to (at the very least) take the alternator off but what I thought was the alternator turns out to be a pump.... Where is the alternator on my car??? (a 1992 Hiace 2.4 TD auto Super Custom)

I know alternators have been covered but not specifically for the Hiace....

Anyhelp (part no/ rough cost/ place to get one in the UK/anything) would be greatly received

Cheers

Thom

I run a Masterace but, I feel sure that the engine & ancilliaries layout is similar on your Hiace. Perhaps a Hiace owner might like to comment.
The alternator is driven from the fan belt and is (located to the right of the engine, looking forward), so, it means the drivers seat out, the floor pan out, and you will see the alternator. The alternator bracket/mounting is the tensioning device for the fan belt. With our type of vehicle, access to the engine etc might be looked upon as a chore but, it is really quite straightforward to remove the seat and floorpan and, after a bit of practice, it only takes around 20 minutes. Also, with the engine cover lifted, ie, passenger set up etc, and the drivesr side floor pan out, it is a very good opportunity to check all the belts, hoses, radiator etc. I cannot help with location or costs of an alternator but, once you have checked all the connections (including cleaning and checking the battery terminals) the best course would be to take the alternator off and get it tested at a local auto electrical repair shop

Location is as John suggests. Its under the air con pump on mine.
As its deisel it will have a vacuum pump attatched, unlike a petrol
Quizzing local garages will get you the name of the nearest reconditioner of alternators.
Is your battery taking a full charge when charged off the vehicle??
