(Home) rough acceleration

Hi, just been desperatly trying to work out why the cruiser wont idle or run up smoothly. Fiddling with the ignition, checking for a spark, which there is, adjusting the idle on the carb, gave the the engine one almighty big rev out of fustration and I could see a manifold stud whizzing round, closer look showed that one was already missing!
Has anyone got any how to's or tips to remove the whole assembly, carb and manifold to slip a new gasket in?

the easiest way i found to get at the manifold is to remove carb first to make access easier
it works out faster then trying to remove as one unit

Just a small note of caution on that.
If you are going to remove the carb, do try to keep the carb upright during and all through the process. That is unless you then want to strip the carb down later to clean the muck from jets and suchlike. No matter how good the filter/s are you will still get a little residue in the carb and if you turn the carb over and around, all you will do is spread this residue through the rest of the carb instead of it sitting in the bottom of the float chamber.
Sorry, having learnt from past mistakes thought i would pass it on.

Thanks for the tips, managed to get the whole assembly off after much struggling, I had to remove the carb at the very end all for just one manifld nut that was wasnt reachable due to the heat shield.
BUT, have found why it was blowing, both outer exhaust studs are now broken, the blow came from a stud long gone, but i have broken the other one the opposite end. How easy is it to remove a broken stud in such a small space, could just get a drill in there?
