(Home) intermitent rev counter

my rev counter is intermittent any ideas on where the best place woud be to start looking as there is no wiring diagrams for it. tried to order the engine manual of local dealer but said it is on back order and could take up to 8 weeks to get it can anyone help get one sooner as i am swopping the turbo and taking the sump/rocker cover of to de-carbon them and would like to know the correct torques for when re-fitting everything. are the sump&rocker gaskets re usable or are they of the old corke type.

What vehicle do you seek assistance regarding?

am i right in assuming that the rev counter is taken of the speed of the alternator if so is there some sort of relay or somthing that then converts the revolutions from the alternator to the dash or am i completely of track as i was thinking eithe a loose wire or a relay breaking down.

sorry forgot to mention. oooops . its a toyota townace 2.0 turbo (2C). because i sent a differebt message over the engine and then the turbo i made the stupid mistake of thinking everyone knows what i have and the problems i am having with it,sorry. when i see all the other postings i should have relised and added the relevant details. thank you in advance once again for any help you may be able to give, and thanks for the website (both this and the aceanswers)they are absolutely fantastic and better than any haynes manual

tacho derives it's signal from a sender at the rear of the injection pump (not the W terminal of the alt as with older VWs etc...) Fuses and connections first, there's a resistance spec for the sender if you need it, although I believe we've had a tacho head break down too.

Valve cover gasket is rubber and reuseable at a pinch. Sump however is bonded on with silicone goo and is a right pain to get off. I'd have to add at this point that you aint going to decarbon anything by removing those covers...

sorry wasnt verry clear, what i meant was by removing the sump & rocker cover i could make sure there was no sludge or anything still in hiding waiting to one day raise its nasty little head and block/restrict the oil pick up or oilways thus causing me more headaches with the turbo or anything else,do you think that this maybe a bit of an extreme measure to go to as like i said in an earlier posting this will soon be my only car and want to try and do as much as poss to bring it back from the clutches of the scrapman (the engine was extremely badly neglected) in the sky before my other car goes to its new owner.

I'd just run a tin of flushing additive through it, personally. Anything nasty is going to be dissolved and/or diluted by you future scheduled oilchanges...

have you got the resistance specs and also how can i check the tacho head you mentioned and whereabout is it located, also as i said the local main dealer has said the manual is on backorder and may take 8 weeks, i am going to ring back tomorow to see if he has a more exact date if he is still a bit vague as to a date has anyone got a copy they can sell me, help please!!!!!!!! 8 weeks is a long time to waite and i would like to try an familliarise myself with the engine and sort out any neglected maintenence, also what is the best litterature to read up on regarding the autobox and 4x4 set up as this is new ground to me, up to now i have been a ford man through and through ie escorts, cortinas, granadas and mondeao all of which manual 2 wheel drive

All the info you need on the drivetrain is in the archives. You might also wish to download the relevany bits of the American Van manual (linked to from the Ace Answers site)

The tacho pickup should read 600-800ohms, check it cold and also when the unit isn't working. The tacho head is the instrument itself. Not much testing you can do- if all the fuses are OK, the sender is OK, and the signal from the sender is reaching the cluster, then no indication means a duff instrument cluster...

Jason. A couple of years ago we had a rumour that the engine manual Code RMO25E was going out of print. I bought a few spare copies at that time and I have two left. I did email you but the message was rejected.
The manuals cost me £9.95 each and, if you wish, you can have one at this price plus a little bit of postage. Because of past horrors regarding spam, I don't put my email address onto public forums anymore but, if you care to ring 01509 556938, we could arrange something. Don't bother to come back to me if you already have something sorted out but, apart from this forum, the manual is one of the best tools you can have if you run a Townace.
