(Home) clicky-klack, engine hiccup and blue grey smoke

Hello,

2WD 1989 Masterace Surf 2-CT with 44000 Km on the clock.

I am experiencing the following.

The engine had a ticking that would come and go over the last 4000 KM. I assumed that it it was one of the Valve shims and put it on my list to tackle when I had some upcoming vacation time. The noise has since become worse ( clattering) necessitating a trip to a Toyota trained diesel mechanic who set up the shims and flushed the engine three times as it was the filthiest specimen internally that he has ever seen. I had already changed the oil & filter shortly after aquiring the van. The area under the valve cover was very gummed up suggesting that the van may never have had any maintenance.

The mechanic set up the shims and noted that one of the Valve guides looked like it may be higher then the others. As the noise was now louder he suggested that the guide may be moving with the valve.

Prior to taking the van to the mechanic. I noticed that on start up there is quite a bit of Blue white smoke and also that the van is puffing black smoke out while under load on hills. Most distressing is that the engine is hiccuping when it is cold and having some difficulty running at initial tickover requiring a jab at the throttle to raise the rev. The hiccups is still present when it warms up. All smoke symptoms are new as the van has been running very clean until this past week.

Because the rattle has gone away at 2500 to 3000 RPM I decide to take a look at the crank pulley. I do not see any visible movement and when cold cannot discern any play by feel.

If the crank pulley has loosened a bit how do you tell? Do the belts hold it tight enough so that you would not be able to tell? Could a loose pulley affect timing?

Using a stethoscope I have tried to isolate the rattle and almost think that it is coming from the timing belt area. I don't hear anything nasty in the head or valve cover area. The timing belt has never been changed which is probably where I will start.

As for the smoke. The turbo works well no nasty rattles from it. It is not leaking, and offers plenty of boost with accompanying "woosh". I also do not see bubbles coming up through the coolant.

So I am wondering about the following.

1. If crank pulley, could it retard the timing enough to create the smoke symptoms and hiccuping?

2. Could this be headgasket related

3. Has anyone experienced a valve guide going on one of these engines, and do these symptoms make sense if that was the problem?

4. Regarding the smoke if the engine was burning to much air and not enough diesel would the smoke have the bluish tinge that I see. Likewise if it was a headgasket problem.

Lastly and most importantly.

Where do I go from here, least intrusive troublehooting to most intrusive troubleshooting.

Thank you

You're in Canada, no? Not a lot of Toyota diesel experience locally, then.

Nasty rough cold idle/ smoke intermittent rattle. Valve clearances OK.

I'm going to plump straight for low compression caused by a broken ring or piston.

Get a compression test done.
Check that the big bolt in the centre of the crank pulley is tight. If it was really loose, it *could* affect the timing, but only once, as a slipped pulley would result in a seized engine and broken valves most likely.
Unlikely to be H/G related, but anything's possible!

i am indeed in canada, vancouver to be exact. sorry to not have mentinonned this eaarlier. we have a few mechanics around town familiar with land cruisers diesel. the 2-ct was imported to canada albeit in a couple of camry's that wound up in quebec.

the crank pulley nut did not feel loose at my fingertips althoui suppose a torque wrench would be the only way to tell for sure.

i will see if i can get hold of a compression testor and go from there.

thank you for the help

I had a broken valve Guide (Not loose)and the symptoms you have which are Bad idling was a symptom as oil gets into the bore (Top of piston). Although some loss of oil was another symptom.

Head has to come off to change the valve Guides and I was quoted £10 for one (If you get the head off yourself) but may as well have them all done while you are there as the price drops to £5 per valve just in case another is on the way out.

Compression test should tell a lot as David Says. Check injectors are not faulty (over fueling) as well as they can cause a knock or tapping also (As I found out to my cost of taking the whole engine apart just for a faulty injector).

Good luck.
