(Home) auto g/box

hi,i have a 2.0 litre f reg space cruiser with an automatic gearbox.everything was good up until today.i used it this morning to do a couple of trips with no problems.but when i came to use it this afternoon it wouldn't change gear.i had to drive about 3/4 mile to pick the kids up and it stayed in 1st unless i floored it.then the revs went up very close to the red, about 1 1/2 thousand revs shy,and it changed up.it changed down again with no difficulty.i duly picked up the kids and started on my return journey.it still wouldn't change up,even when floored this time.
am i looking at another box,and if so where can i get one from.
heeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllpppppppppppp

Hi,just checked fluid level and there is plenty,if anything there is too much.

Do you have 'turbo' installed?

- (#1829) Jeffrey, 16 Jun 05 04:40

You are checking the level with the oil hot and the engine running in neutral?

I don't have a turbo fitted, and I was checking with it cold and not running and the level says it is over the level it should be when hot.Have just reversed up my drive and it reached halfway then lost motion and rolled forward a little then seemed to engage and carried on reversing.I'm totally lost here.

Without the engine running the torque converter will drain back into the sump, you will get a false reading.
What colour is the fluid?
Maybe worth giving it a change anyway?

Phil, the fluid was changed about 2 months ago when a new selector rod was fitted. The fluid is a dark brown almost black colour.

Colour not good, should be pinkish red, and clear.
Changing the fluid is the cheapest option.
