(Home) aircon gas - which type to use

Hi

Just bought my first Townace about two weeks ago - very happy and enjoying getting to know it. It is a 1994 Super Extra 2.2TD. My aircon is not working very well and I think it needs regassed. I have read many of the postings on aircon in ace answers but types of gas to use and conversions etc. all seem to refer to earlier models of Townace. Can anyone tel me if these later Townies used the old R12 gas or newer R134, and when (if ever) did Toyota get around to building them with the more modern types of gas?
Hope someone can answer this one for me.
Thanks, Michael

Dunno exactly when Toyota moved away from R12. Probably around the turn of the century when it was outlawed. If you stick a thermometer in one of the dash vents, with aircon on and blowers on full, the temp should quickly drop below 5 deg C. If it doesn't then a regas is called for. Look for an aircon mech in your yellow pages, some will come out to you. You should be paying in the region of £50 - £80 for a regas. However, I've been informed that one of the few plants producing the gas have closed meaning higher prices for the stuff.

If you have R12 then he will expel it and replace with his preferred brand of alternative but 134a is the most common. Some will recommend replacing seals while some simply include an additive with the gas.

I might be wrong here but, when I had my Masterace system re-gassed about three years ago, I seem to remember being told by the servicing Co that they could tell that old type gas was in the system because of the type of filling valves fitted. New valves (There are two on the system) were fitted and the system was filled with the new 134 type of gas.
It's worth calling at a re-gassing Co and get them to do a test and inspection after you have done the temperature test suggested by Ian

Thanks for this - will try both suggestions.
