Auto Gearbox oil

Should be Dexron II, check the end of the dipstick, it should be marked. Fluid level is checked with the dipstick fully inserted and the engine running in "P". The box is refilled through the dipstick tube.

Kickdown

On top of the injection pump, the accelerator cable comes over the top of the engine and the kickdown cable goes in line with the engine towards the rear, connected to the same lever. You should see the (orange?) coloured boot on the cable end. If for some reason the coloured boot isn't there, the ferrule on the cable should be around 40mm.

Check if the cable is binding. You can spend an interesting couple of hours adjusting then road-testing the kickdown cable. Turning the nut clockwise to slacken the cable makes it less inclined to "kick down" - and vice versa. Optimum setting around 5mm of free play in the cable - slack enough to just touch the pump housing when at idle.

Overdrive

The Overdrive switch (on the gear knob) turns the light on and off on the dash and gives you a 4th forward gear, but it also locks the torque converter, which increases efficiency. Try accelerating gently from around 35- 45 mph. At a certain speed, you will notice the revs drop, and if you accelerate more, they will only rise in time with the road speed (about 38mph?) That's the converter locking up.

To keep it simple, leave Overdrive on (dash indicator light off) all the time. The only time you are likely to need to switch overdrive off, is if you are doing a lot of hill climbing. The 'box will "hunt" between 3rd and 4th - and you want to keep momentum going with high revs. Turning the o/d off locks it into 3rd.
