Owners Manual (not a Service manual)

www.importhandbooks.co.uk provide one promptly by mail order for £22, translated to English from Japanese by JPNZ Enterprises International, New Zealand in association with Toyota NZ. JPNZ part no. FRO320. Its 138 A5 pages do not have everything that you might expect or hope for in an owners manual. It states that it is for Townace 91/92-97, but a lot of the content applies more widely. The dashboard indicators and controls are described, as are driving techniques with the various transmission options (covering perhaps 10% of the questions put to the UKSpace Board of Knowledge). I'm avoiding repeating in this summary stuff that's in that manual (or any other) - but that's for copyright reasons rather than because I want to force you to buy one.

2 Turbo lights on the rev counter

Operated by two pressure switches. Both lights come on as a self-test. At low loads or revs, the turbo may be spinning slowly but will not create boost.
Green = 1.5psi turbo working OK, beginning to create boost.
Amber warns you that the turbo is overboosting, creating too much pressure (above 10psi), indicating a wastegate failure.

Red button

The red rectangular button next to automatic gear stick mechanically over-rides the lock on it when trying to move out of Park. Usually you press the footbrake to do this - but that relies on the brake light circuit and only works if the electrics are on.

Green light

The large green square shaped light on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel is to illuminate the ignition switch to assist you in the dark. Stays on for about 5 seconds after the drivers door is closed. There is a relay behind the instrument panel to control it. It's called the "light control relay".

Reversing lights

To get to the reversing lights, take all the trim off the back door. They are 16W wedge base. Those big wedge base lamps are nearly impossible to get in the UK. To improve them...
1. Go to your nearest scrapyard and get two lampholders for ordinary bulbs from a Toyota - indicator or rear light cluster. Just splice them in replacing the original wedge base socket. The lampholders are directly interchangeable. 21w lamps help a lot. There's no other lamp with the same fitting and higher wattage unless you go for a stop/tail holder, in which case there is a 32/4w bulb, used by Volvo and Saab for their day running lights. There is, however, a halogen 21w available, your local motor factor may be able to order.
2. Also try glueing tinfoil to the reflector. No easy access to the reflectors, though - the rear surround is one piece, the lenses are welded on. You might be able to stick a piece if foil on through the bulb aperture.

Side/fog lights

Bear in mind how the original set-up was in Japan. the large side lights that wrap around the body (in-line with the headlamps) are wired to come on when the indicators come on - i.e. when you use the left indicator the left side light illuminates (useful when it is dark to see the side of the road) - this only happens when the lights are on. Most dealers change this arrangement when imported so that these lights act as sidelights. Some wire up the front fog lights in conjuction with the side lights as in their opinion, the side lights could not be seen from the front of the vehicle very well when in use.

Rear Heating

The rear heater is atwo way switch, like a staircase light. Both the front and rear switches are"two way". According to my townie (1991 cr30), the colours are asfollows: common= blue/black stripe, it's a blue wire out of the switch, thenthe two switch wires are white/black(+red ring) and yellow/black changing toyellow/white+red ring. Connecting either wire to common should bring the fanon, it'll still be controlled by the rear switch.
