(Home) Speedometer

Access to Speedo etc

1) Park without bright sun shining in your face and with the steering wheel "upright" so that the spokes don't get in the way. Make yourself comfortable sitting in the drivers seat with a medium-sized posidrive screwdriver. Remove the two screws that secure the inner trim surrounding the speedo and instruments (under the top of the trim). Gently lever the top edge down and carefully pull the trim straight out towards you (some clips secure it - just pull).
2) Remove the four screws that secure the speedo/instrument panel (Not the two at the top that hold the transparent cover on to it.)
3) Pull the panel forward gently and look round the back from the right hand side. You can see three electrical connectors. Remove them by pinching the clips on the long sides and pulling gently away from the panel.
4) Twist the panel - pull the right side towards you and push the left side away from you inside the cavity. Look round the back again, the speedo cable will be visible, and prevents you from pulling the panel all the way off. You must release this cable by reaching round the back and squeezing the (greasy) spring-loaded clip on the barrel at the end of the speedo cable. The panel should now come all of the way off, but you may want to clean your fingers first!
5) If any instrument bulbs have blown - now is the time to replace them. All of the bulbholders on the speedo panel are easily accesible from here.
6) Replace the speedo cable (push to fit back on and it will click on) and the electrical connectors. Replace the four panel screws. Replace the trim and screws.

Speedometer

Importers have 3 options.
1. Stick on a new dial (of the right type e.g. with/without TEMS) with MPH (&kph) which leaves the counter in km,
2. fit a reducing gearbox in the speedo drive cable (quicker?) which converts both the speed and counter indication (from that point on) to miles, or
3. do neither.
93-on models are electric.

Speed warning Gong

There is a good reference (see BING!) to this on the Townace Nutters site. The "bing" gong/bell connects to the panel by a clip and two wires (see "Access.." above. Check the link to see what it actually looks like). Remove the clip screw(s). Remove the two wires by undoing the screws, removing the wires and replacing the screws. Warning! the printed circuit that the screws go into seems to be printed on a piece of polyethene so be careful not to rip this when the screws come out.
