Engine Repair Manual

Toyota Part No RM025E is a helpful publication for the 2C-T engine, obtainable from a local Toyota dealership. A 1985 publication, it only costs about £8.50, and is ESSENTIAL reading for any owner/mechanic. It covers all engine-related areas.
It is VERY comprehensive, much better than a Haynes manual (which we cannot get anyway).Gives torque settings and spanner sizes in the text - rather than you having to search for them in a massive table at the back! Deals with all aspects of the engine, fault diagnosis and rectification, and has much information, including wiring diagrams, on the alternator, starter, ancilliaries etc.
There is an Autodata manual (£50). It gives, for example, additional torque information.

Head gasket

The original Toyota Gasket I understand is preferable to the fabric type although it must be whistle clean before during and after fitting (!) and the advice to me was that one MUST replace all head bolts rather than only if they break as suggested by the Toyota book. Some have helpfully indicated an "upgraded" head gasket to overcome frequent failures.
One point though worth a mention - when tightening the cyl head bolts: Headbolts torque to 33lbf, +90° +90°. Injection timing is 0.67- 0.73mm @tdc. (See repair manual RM025E).The Autodata manual gives an additional torque stage of something like 22ftLb prior to the 33FtLb. It also specifies a half-hour wait between the 33ftLb and each of the 90 degree turns.
